In about 6 hours, I'm heading to Seattle to teach another class! Never been there before so I'm excited --and I'm enlisting you again! (You were so good with my Boston plea) What should I do? Where should I eat?
On another note, spent the afternoon with this guy -he's awesome, btw. Be sure to check this blog Monday & Tuesday for little updates on a special project --or you can follow me on twitter.
AND... I will pick my "testers" from 5 posts below by tonight.
Peace out.
eat @ Cafe Press, Txori, La Spiga, Tamarind Tree, Top Pot Donuts, Skillet(this one is mobile and changes locations, but two words: bacon jam!)
ReplyDeleteRed Mill burgers is really yummy and Ivars is just a Seattle institution! It's so fun to sit down on the water while enjoying a yummy lunch!
ReplyDeleteI love Le Pichet near Pike Place Market. http://lepichetseattle.com/page3.html Schedule some classes in Portland soon too!
ReplyDeleteYou have to have seafood while in Seattle. My favorite place isn't the most expensive or fancy, Chinooks, at Fisherman's Terminal, a bit away from Downtown. The food is great, the prices reasonable and you'll feel like a true Seattlite. My favorite downtown place? Thai Ginger - great Asian fusion.
ReplyDeletePike's Place is, of course, a can't miss. Nearby is the Nordstrom mother-store, which is always nice, especially the shoe section.
If you have time, get on the ferry at least to Bainbridge, it is a beautiful ride. Alki beach is lovely, as is Gas Works Park.
Enjoy being in my former home and one of the most beautiful cities in the world.
Space Needle! great views! it rotates so you will see everything! Pike Place is great! We usually always eat lunch there when were in town!
ReplyDeleteIf you want the real Seattle experience (not necessarily the touristy stuff) check these places out!
ReplyDeleteBrunch: Coastal Kitchen (Capitol Hill), Macrina Bakery (Belltown or Queen Anne), Volunteer Park Cafe (Capitol Hill)
Lunch: 5 Spot (Queen Anne), Red Door (Fremont), Goldbergs (Bellevue - totally worth the drive across the water!), Spud's (West Seattle), anything in Wallingford on 45th
Dinner: Matt's in the Market (Pike Place Market), Restaurant Zoe (Belltown - hands down my favorite restaurant in the entire city), Harvest Vine (Madison Park), Pink Door (Pike Place Market)
Actually, I'm stopping here. There are too many great dinner spots. If there's a specific type of cuisine or ambiance you're looking for feel free to email me directly and I can give you a few recs. malia at tulipchainphotography dot com.
Have fun! Seattle's a fun place to be!
boat street cafe is a wonderful place for dinner & their brunch is fantastic! macrina bakery, volunteer park cafe is quaint, hidden in a neighborhood of amazingly beautiful homes. pike place market is a must, proishky proisky at the market as well as Orangette's own (http://orangette.blogspot.com/) delancey! excited to meet you tomorrow!
ReplyDeleteIf you like yummy cheap local burger spots you simply must try Dick's - they have a couple of locations in Seattle and are a great late night snack.
ReplyDeleteCupcake Royale is great if you are a cupcake fan.
And Beecher's Cheese across from Pike Place Market has the yummiest mac and cheese in the world.
At Pikes Place after you see the fish throwing keep walking around the corner and snag a half dozen mini donuts. The line could be long depending on the day---it's worth it.
ReplyDeleteIt will be hard to resist the fresh bouquets of flowers as well. Sample the nuts, the jalepeno jelly's, and amazing jam.
Take a gander around University of Washington campus. The University Avenue has some great places to eat-Gurros, Bubble Tea, Pho, etc.etc.
If you like Sushi check out Blue C Sushi while you are in the University area, it's at U.Village (a great clean outdoor shopping place)
If you want cheap but delicious and fast seafood then Ivars is a good spot, greasy but a must-go. Located downtown on the pier.
I suggest the Seattle Public Library and the Experience Music Project since both are places unique to the city and architecturally and design noticed.
Try to get yourself to Queen Anne and walk around. There is a spectacular view of the city from the top of Queen Anne, and plenty of interesting people and cool stores.
The Wild Ginger for great upscale Thai. I second the Coastal Kitchen. Cafe Vivace for a something with their magic steamed milk.
ReplyDeleteI know people have mentioned it previously, but you have to go to Pike's Place. One of my favorite places!
ReplyDeleteBeechers at pikes place.
ReplyDeletePiroshky Piroshky at pikes place.
mmmmmm.
I absolutely agree about Queen Anne--the views of the city from the top of the hill are amazing. Check out Kerry Park on Queen Anne hill (211 W. Highland Drive). That's where a lot of the stock shots of the city come from (the ones you see in movies and stuff). The view can't be missed.
ReplyDeleteI also second the mention of Gasworks Park. On a sunny day, it affords breathtaking view of the city. http://www.seattle.gov/parks/park_detail.asp?ID=293
I am so sad that I can't take the class this weekend (I'm helping out at a high school retreat). However, I'm extremely hopeful that you'll be back to Seattle...and soon!
ReplyDeleteOkay, there are some great choices listed above already. I'll add my 2 cents...for what they're worth. :)
Umi Sake House - BEST SUSHI and my favorite Seattle restaurant!
Wild Ginger - worth repeating
Dick's - local favorite, no special orders
Red Mill - also a good choice, good burgers, GREAT shakes!
Purple - Great fun, but more spendy
Pink Door - worth repeating
Don't bother eating at the Space Needle...not worth the price!
The 5 Spot - another one worth repeating
Cupcake Royale - fun, good, cute
Tamarind Tree - another local favorite
I apologize in advance for the weather. It's been fairly decent all week, but it's supposed to rain most of the weekend. Although the rest of the world believes that it rains here all the time, I can assure you it doesn't. ;) In the same breath, don't tell too many folks that...we don't want everyone to know how incredible this city is! We're crowded enough as is. :)
I can't wait to hear all about your adventure in the Emerald City! I love this place!
I grew up there, but on my last visit I went out to Blake Island for the first time. There you'll find Tillicum Village Restaurant and Northwest Coast Indian Cultural Center--it was fabulous. Really good salmon and similar to the PCC in Hawaii for Native Americans in the Northwest. http://www.tillicumvillage.com/
ReplyDeleteLoved it.
Seattle is fantastic.
ReplyDeleteChallenge: I would love to see pictures from you involving rain/rain drops/bad weather. I know you could shoot it beautifully, yet I always have such a hard time making a good, solid shot when it's raining...
And p.s...
ReplyDeleteThe Pink Door is an incredibly Italian-American restaurant with an old-fashioned cabaret lounge. It's located just above Pike Place on Post Alley. So fun.
ICE CREAM: Go to Molly Moons for the salted caramel ice cream. Locations on Capital Hill and Wallingford. SO GOOD!!
ReplyDeleteLots of good suggestions here... but I'll second a couple (and add a couple of new ones):
ReplyDelete- Sitka & Spruce on Eastlake
- Le Pichet, Matt's in the Market, Txori, Serious Pie, Seattle Coffee Works, Macrina Bakery if you are downtown
- La Spiga, Anchovies & Olives, Licourous, Cafe Presse on Cap Hill
- Senor Moose, La Carta Oaxaca, Delancey in Ballard
If you are in town on Sunday, definitely head up to the Ballard Farmer's Market for a fun morning!
definitely eat here: http://delanceyseattle.com/
ReplyDeleteIf you make it to Pike's Place Market (which you really must if you're going to Seattle) go to Three Girls Bakery--some of the best baked goods around.
ReplyDeleteJust a word of advice--don't just get a goody for the moment, take a few things for later. Love the mounds, haystacks, and p.b. cup cookies. Wish I had some right now!
If you like Salumi...Armandino's Salumi http://www.salumicuredmeats.com/
ReplyDeleteGet there early...there is always a line!

Have fun in Seattle - love that city!
People have already gave you some GREAT ideas. I just can't believe how many Seattleites are saying "Pike's Place" instead of "Pike Place."
ReplyDeleteOh, but for the BEST view of the city, go to Kerry Park on Queen Anne Hill. There are usually lots of people there taking pictures.
ReplyDeleteivar's on the pier is a great seattle institution and dick's is a really fun local place for burgers.
ReplyDeleteCoconut Cream Pie @ Dahlia Lounge, a Tom Douglas Restaurant.
ReplyDeleteA Tour of Theo, a chocolate factory in the Fremont Neighborhood--make reservations or try to go standby. If in Fremont, ask to see the Troll under the bridge and someone will point you in the right direction.
You have to go to the Seattle Library - AMAZING. Bring your camera.
ReplyDeleteSeattle is my home town!
ReplyDeletePike place has great food and great views from the cafe down from the fish guys.
The space needle is too expensive. I agree that there are better views elsewhere- including from the "donut" at volunteer park. Also the sculpture park is outstanding, open a lot and free. You can get right to the sound there.
Food- cupcake royale and Molly moons fer sure! We recently discovered tin table on capitol hill, to die for truffle salt fries! Tilth is unbelievable - a special occasion type of place. And, as a vegetarian, I am partial to cafe flora in Madison park!
Enjoy!
Gasworks Park is usually fun although the view might not be great depending on the weather. As for restaurants, Tilth is amazing and if you go you have to stop by Molly Moon's for ice cream and possibly Trophy cupcakes if you have room. (All three are within a few blocks of each other).
ReplyDeleteThe other place I can't recommend enough is The Kingfish Cafe. The food there is AMAZING.
Oh! Oh! Oh! Another HUGE endorsement for the Kingfish! I can't believe I forgot to list that earlier! Sooooooo good and in a really neat neighborhood (it's nice for an early evening walk).
ReplyDeleteHmm...I'll have to remember to look back through here once I finally get to visit Seattle. I've always wanted to... although I might skip the seafood.
ReplyDeleteDahlia's - try the donuts in the bag for desert.
ReplyDelete5 spot for sure! I love the Queen Anne neighborhood.
ok... So I know its totally nerdy and people have been ragging on it, but the resturant at the Space Needle is my favorite. I look at it this way, its one of those touristy things you just gotta do and the cost of the elevator ride to the top is $16 a person, but if you eat in the resturant, your ride is free. Plus the food is actually REALLY good (albeit expensive). I'd say go for lunch, the menu is around $25-$30 per person but its delicious and you can't beat the view. This is usually where we take people when they come to visit.
ReplyDeleteThe underground tour of Seattle is worth going on atleast one. Although I am sure the tour guide's jokes probably have a lot to do with how entertaining your tour is.
ReplyDeleteDicks burger is to Seattle as Inn -n- Out is to California. Born and raised in Sonoma but Seattle has won my heart after living there the last 2 1/2 years.
ReplyDeleteTrophy cupcake is also a treasure. They have one in Wallingford and one in University Village now. U Village is a GREAT shopping center. They have a LuLu Lemon, Restoration Hardware, Anthropologie H&M. Just to name a few. Blu Fin Sushi is a good place that is there as well.
Also, Teddy's Burger in Woodinville is absolutely delicious. I went to school in Hawaii and they only have Teddy's in Kailua and Woodinville Wa. It is worth the beautiful drive.
Capital Hill is a must. It is a mini San Fran and they have a Dick's there too.
As far as a cheap afternoon activity you can go canoeing at the UW arboretum. It is beautiful and one of my favorite activities any time of year.
le pichet is my fav in all of seattle. BUT for a special experience, hop on the ferry and head over to bainbridge island for dinner at the four swallows or brunch at cafe nola.
ReplyDeleteSerious Pie (happy hour) and Trophy Cupcake—seriously, don't go to Cupcake Royale...I'm just sayin ;)
ReplyDeletedefinitely go to Pike Place Market and take a walk along the Seattle waterfront. Pike Place has so many little vendors inside of it (watch out for the fish the men inside toss back and forth, haha!), and the waterfront on a sunny day is gorgeous-- lots of photo opportunities there!
ReplyDeleteSeattle is such a pretty city to walk around and I so wish I could make it to your class this Sunday! Have fun while you're here :]
Everyone else gave you great recommendations! I grew up there but didn't do all the "touristy" things, so I am excited to hear about what you end up doing!
ReplyDeleteaw, say hello to seattle for me! i grew up there and am always missing it.
ReplyDeletezeke's pizza is really great but if it's late at night and you just want a cheeseburger and a milkshake, go to dicks. good memories are always had there.
also, easy street records is one of the best record stores i have ever been to.
i may be too late to add my .02 here. i recommend cafe flora (28th and madison). YUM.
ReplyDeleteTottini, Velocity and Vivace are all close to each other in the South Lake Union area of Seattle (and just across the road from the huge REI) - they are all worth a visit. I had dinner at Barolo recently and it was gorgeous! Also the SAM sculpture park on the waterfront.
ReplyDeleteHave a fun trip.
