My mom and I made a one-day trip back to Malad, Idaho to visit my great uncle and aunt. We had a great time sitting around the kitchen table for over 5 hours sharing stories and photographs. Two years ago, we started a photo documentary project of this small town and my grandpa's life... and little by little, we are collecting more:
My mom could not have been more lucky. The coveted deer jerky (rarely made and even more rarely shared) was being made that weekend by my great uncle with his secret recipe -learned from his grandpa through Indian Americans.
photo of my grandpa.
Grandpa served an LDS mission in Alabama. This is a photo of my great aunt (the Post Mistress) delivering a letter from Grandpa to his mother (her mother-in-law). I can't believe they caught these moments on film. Magical.
A liberty bell bank that both brothers had when they were little.
Hands down, the best donuts I've ever had. Tasty's from Kaysville. I probably had about 5.
My grandpa's storybook -huge treasure. The guy always had a ridiculous sense of humor.
and our lovely hosts: my great aunt and uncle

The last pictures of your grandparents warms my heart. I love seeing evident joy and happiness between two people.
ReplyDeleteSo cool, what a neat project!
ReplyDeleteWhen I first saw the blog title in my reader I was nervous you had your baby and names him/her Malad. Glad I was wrong :)

ReplyDeleteLove!
ReplyDeletethat beef jerky looks SO good.
ReplyDeleteNicole...I love this post it absolutely warms my heart!! My grandparents are Reed and Valoy Smith, and I really love the pictures of them that you took! My mom saw them and was wondering if she could get copies of them? My e-mail is tessbtaylor@hotmail.com and my name is Tessa Taylor. And maybe I can sneek some deer jerky to your family, but I will have to see because the deer meat is from my brother's deer and he is being VERY stingy with the meat (I have to say I can't blame him that stuff is heaven!) Anyway thanks so much again for this post, I love my grandparents so much and you write such nice things about them.
ReplyDeleteits crazy how everyone knows somebody from Malad! My grandmother is from there too! I love that little town.

ReplyDeleteNicole, I just love the photos you took of my grandparents! They are beautiful! Looking at them makes me miss them and Malad sooo much. And, but the way, I'm SO SO SO jealous you and your mom got deer jerkey!
ReplyDeletethe pics of your grandparents made me smile....so sweet.
ReplyDeleteYep, it is true. Everyone knows someone from malad. My parents grew up in Malad. My mom had to move into Hotel Malad when she was in high school because her parents could no longer afford their house. They ran the hotel and lived in the apartment upstairs. If you ever want something to photograph you should photograph it. It is awesome and there is a slight chance it might be haunted;) There is always a good story to be told about malad. Have you ever heard of the Iron Door?
