i love my computer.
i love the internet.
i love my tv.
i LOVE my phone.
unfortunately, i am feeling a bit like the drone characters in farenheit 451.
for the next two weeks, i'm limiting my computer/internet/tv/phone time -except for work. instead, i'll be:
reading, madame bovary
and knitting my third big bad baby blanket from stitch n' bitch.
pic from here. and no, i'm not preggers.. i just like making these.
That sounds like a wonderful idea. Have fun :o)
ReplyDeleteI bought the set of books, too, and I just started Madame Bovary. Are you reading them in order (I didn't immediately realize they were numbered, but when I noticed I realized that I liked the order!).
ReplyDeletefunny that you posted this today as Richie and I are on a week long media fast as of today. :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a great plan. Sometimes we really need to remove ourselves from the internet and live life!
ReplyDeleteMadame Bovary is lovely. Enjoy!
ReplyDeleteThis is what I read in one of my favorite blogs the other day, and now your post reminded me of that :
ReplyDelete"You’re in a hurry. You hastily grab your stuff, lock the door and head out. You’ve walked almost thirty steps when you get a feeling. You start checking your gear, you can hear your keys jingling, sunglasses are there, your wallet’s there… but something’s not… You start double checking every pocket and slot while you are still walking… yep, you thought right it’s not there. You head back home as if you have left a part of your heart or soul behind, it’s like the tapes on rewind as you are rushing back. And there it is lying on your desk, your cell phone.
Us slaves to, us victims of, modern technology."

I gave up my cell phone!( We keep one for emergencies while driving) When I say I don't have one, people just look at me funny, but I love not being reached, because when I'm out, I'm doing something and I don't need someone calling me. If it's an emergency I'll be home soon enough to get their call. It has really been a feeling of freedom.
ReplyDeleteHey Nicole :) I got to enjoy Madame Bovary in my French literature course in University last semester, yes Bovary en francais is another experience on its own :)
ReplyDeleteKeep this in mind while you read it... I enjoyed knowing it:
When Flaubert was asked about the book he said two things which surprised people:
Madame Bovary, c'est moi!
C'est une histoire de rien (about NOTHING).
It took him 10 years to finish it...each page he would read out loud and if at any point a word did not sound like it fit, he would go about finding a synonym or changing the passage altogether. Remarkable eh?
It's a good book but I was in a melancholic stupor for a while afterwards...just knowing all the meaning in it.
